GBS construction management students recently visited a live construction site at Queen Mary University of London, courtesy of Willmott Dixon.
The visit gave students the opportunity to experience an active construction environment first-hand and gain insight into how modern, large-scale education facilities are delivered. For many, it was a valuable chance to see how classroom theory translates into real-world practice.
The session began with an introduction to the project, which has been designed to replace outdated infrastructure with a state-of-the-art building. The development will provide flexible study spaces, quiet zones and collaborative learning environments, supporting both students and academic staff.
Students also explored the complexities of delivering a project in a busy urban location. Situated in the heart of the campus, close to Regent’s Canal and major transport links, the site presents unique logistical challenges, offering a valuable learning experience.
A guided tour of the site allowed students to observe construction progress up close, including work on new facilities and the refurbishment of nearby buildings of heritage interest. The project also incorporates landscaped terraces and green spaces, designed to create a welcoming environment for both the community and the public.
Experiences like this play an important role in bridging the gap between academic study and industry practice for our students.
GBS would like to thank Willmott Dixon for hosting this insightful and engaging experience.
